Ukraine is testing a new combat UGV: what is known about Bufalo

Ukrainian developers have introduced a new ground robot, Bufalo, which is currently undergoing testing and is preparing for an official presentation and codification. The team plans to begin production with 10 machines per month, with further scaling of the project, Oboronka reports.

The robot is designed for logistics and humanitarian demining, but in the future it may become multifunctional – in particular, performing engineering tasks or being fitted with a combat module. Like the already known Protector, Bufalo is equipped with a diesel engine, which enables the drone to cover a distance of 100–200 km.

The drone weighs about 4 tonnes, moves at a speed of up to 20 km/h and remains inconspicuous due to its low profile. Its body is made of armoured European steel and can withstand bullets and indirect fire from 152 mm shells at a distance of up to 100 m.

Communication is provided via Starlink and a radio channel. The satellite system with protected GPS navigation operates thanks to the CRPA antenna, and in case of problems with access to Starlink, the developers have provided a backup channel via a repeater.

Bufalo is equipped with an artificial intelligence system for local navigation: it analyses data from cameras, detects obstacles at a distance of up to 15 m, suggests a route and stops in case of danger. At the same time, the robot cannot make a decision to use force – control always remains with the operator.

The developers emphasise that Bufalo is 70% made of Ukrainian components, including electronics and cameras, while the remaining 30% consists of basic components from EU countries.

The cost of the complex has not been disclosed at this time.

It is also worth noting that in August, German ARX Robotics presented its first combat UGV, created in collaboration with the Ukrainian start-up Frontline.
