Ukrainian portable FPV drone detector “Chuyka 3.0” deployed to the front lines

The portable electronic reconnaissance device “Chuyka 3.0”, developed by the Ukrainian company Blue Bird, is already in use on the front lines, according to the state defence cluster Brave1. The detector is designed to detect and intercept analogue video signals from FPV drones, as well as other types of UAVs, such as the Russian “Molniya“, provided they use the appropriate signal format.

If a drone enters the device’s detection range (up to 4 km), “Chuyka” automatically identifies the video signal. Audible and visual alerts are activated even before a stable image is received, providing an early warning of potential threats. The frequency of the sound signal depends on the number of detected channels (up to three). The visual indicator remains active at all times, even if the sound is muted manually.

The technical display shows the number of signal sources, their frequencies and channels. If required, the operator can view the intercepted footage on a larger display or connect an external screen via the analogue AV-out port.

Scanning is carried out across three key frequency bands, covering up to 95% of FPV drone frequencies, and takes only 4–8 seconds. “Chuyka 3.0” automatically adapts to ambient radio noise levels, helping to reduce false alarms. It supports inverted video signals (scramblers) and allows for fine-tuning of frequencies to improve image quality during playback.

The device does not require any initial setup and begins scanning immediately after being powered on. It features a simple, robust design with minimal controls and a PLA plastic housing that is resistant to damage. Thanks to standard SMA connectors, users can attach higher-sensitivity antennas. Batteries can be replaced quickly in the field without disassembling the device or contacting a service centre.

The device’s developer, Blue Bird, specialises in invention, development and production of radio electronics. In addition to the “Chuyka 3.0”, the company also manufactures vehicle-mounted, dome and trench-based electronic warfare systems under the “Grets” series, as well as ground relay and control stations, charging units, antennas, individual EW modules, the “Bandura” UGV, and other technical equipment.

It is worth recalling that the Ukrainian manufacturer Unwave has also unveiled a new infantry electronic warfare system, the “Patelnya-2K/3K”, designed to counter drones dropping explosive devices on infantry units.
